Boston, MA – June 26, 2026 Latinos for Education hosted its fifth annual Latino Educators Shine Awards at the MCLE Conference Center, Boston, on June 23, 2026. Omar Gonzalez, Mathematics Teacher and Grade Team Leader at Salem Academy Charter School was recognized for his achievements. This year, more than 50 Latino educators from across the Commonwealth were honored by state legislators for the trailblazing work they do in the classroom every day.
Gonzalez was recognized by State Rep. Manny Cruz and State Senator Joan Lovely for his dedication and commitment as an educator, as well as for the positive impact he has on students, families, and the broader Salem community. Gonzalez was one of 15 charter public school teachers from across the state to be recognized.
Senator Liz Miranda (Democrat – 2nd Suffolk) and Representative Michael P. Kushmerek (Democrat – 3rd Worcester) were also honored at this year’s awards ceremony for their legislative work in advancing educator diversity and retention. The ceremony featured remarks from Miranda, Kushmerek; and Dr. Regina Robinson, Special Assistant to the Commissioner. Also speaking were key leaders from Latinos for Education, including Amanda Fernandez, CEO and Founder; Jacqueline Monterroso, Director of Policy and Advocacy; and Migdalia Diaz, COO and Massachusetts Interim Executive Director.
Omar Gonzalez, a 12-year veteran in education, is an accomplished educator and instructional leader who currently serves as an 8th Grade Mathematics Teacher and Grade Team Leader. He is committed to fostering rigorous, equitable, and student-centered learning environments, while supporting colleagues through collaboration, coaching, and shared accountability. A graduate of the Ascend Leadership Program, a national leadership development initiative focused on cultivating Hispanic and Latino education leaders, Mr. Gonzalez strengthened his expertise in resilient leadership, instructional systems, and sustainable school improvement. He is particularly passionate about advancing outcomes for multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and historically underserved student populations, through high-quality instruction and strong adult culture. Mr. Gonzalez’s leadership is grounded in the belief that consistent expectations, meaningful relationships, and continuous growth create the conditions for both students and educators to thrive.
