Salem Academy's First Major Drama Production

Wiley and the Hairy Man

Salem Academy is very proud to present the inaugural production of the Salem Academy Players, Wiley and the Hairy Man, to be performed Thursday, May 15 & Friday, May 16, at Gloucester Stage. Wiley and the Hairy Man is a wonderful coming of age tale set deep in the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou.  A young, fatherless boy, Wiley, must learn to face his fear, embodied by the swamp's resident monster, The Hairy Man who haunts Wiley's days and dreams. After several exciting encounters, Wiley learns to rely upon his own resources and not to depend on his conjure woman mother. Alternately, spine-tingling and humorous, a Bayou Chorus creates the mystery of the swamp where the magic of the play is not fairy dust -- it is soil. This play, winner of the ASSITEJ Outstanding Play Award, and written by Susan Zedar, is enhanced by several interludes of Cajun Folktales and monologues from Zora Neale Hurston's autobiography Dust Tracks on the Road.  Salem Academy Players is under the direction of Mrs. Granniss and the technical direction of Ms. Olson and currently boasts 70 students in its cast, percussion group and technical crew.
