Thank you to everyone who showed their support and encouragement to our baseball and softball teams as they took on Boston Collegiate in the MCSAO Championship. While neither game was won, both teams showed improvement and have come a very long way thanks to their hard work and commitment. It was very exciting to hear the excitement going through the school hallways, and when the bus of 40 student supporters arrived it showed how these two teams have helped build school spirit. These are two very young teams with very bright futures ahead.
The New Orleans Service trip was May 17 thru May 25, 2014. Salem Academy students volunteered with the United Saints Recovery Project, an organization that helps individuals in need of help rehabilitating their homes post Katrina, as well as more recent disasters. This year the volunteers worked on the ancestral home of US veteran Mr. Gerry, helped finish the home of a hard working citizen Mr. George, and helped create a community adobe bench. They installed dry wall, stripped and plastered walls, cut and laid tile, cut and nailed baseboard, painted, pulled carpet and removed debris.
The group also enjoyed visits to the French Quarter, beignets and Café Du Monde, a tour of Tulane University, a ferry ride to Algiers Point, a concert on Lafayette Square, and shot some hoops with kids at a neighborhood youth center. It was a great trip where students received glowing reviews from volunteer coordinators and site supervisors.
